Sauser in Estonia 2010, Tallinn Port GP and Kalevipoeg Cycling Marathon

Sulev Lipp

Events, 18. July 2010

In 2010, Christoph visited us for the second time. At that time, we had plans to start organizing XCO races in Nõmme, Tallinn, which, according to the plan, would have become the XCO European Championships in a couple of years. Unfortunately, conservationists put a stop to this plan, and we were no longer allowed to organize anything technical in Nõmme. The race could only take place in 2009 and 2010.

At that time, we also had another race planned for the following day: the Kalevipoeg Cycling Marathon. Before the race, there was a lot of speculation that the XCO guy would definitely beat our road cyclists on a flat course like Kalevipoeg. The race proceeded mostly in a group until they reached the famous peat section. Sauser later said that he just kept going at the same pace, but the hard forks and tails couldn't keep up on the more technical surface. He was quite surprised by his Estonian competitors, posting a picture of the starting line on his blog to illustrate how races are run here – the only two-seater bike among a field of hardtails. He said he had never seen anything like it in any MTB race before!
